Oxygen not neccesarily key to rise of animal, Sponges suggest

Primitive sea sponges survive on very low oxygen, much less than animal life thought to need.
A long-held theory about why it took so long for animals to evolve has been called into question by a new study on sea sponges, some of the most primitive animals alive today.
The first microbes evolved around 3.6 billion years ago, but complex life involving many cells that cooperate for the good of a single organism didn't show up for around another 3 billion years.
That was also about the time that levels of oxygen in the atmosphere rose dramatically toward present day concentrations of about 20 per cent. And many scientists thought that animals needed the higher oxygen levels to survive and evolve.
However, a new study shows that some of the most primitive living complex animals, sponges — likely among the earliest animals to evolve — can survive with almost no oxygen.

Sponge-like creature found in N.W.T. could be Earth's oldest animal
Sponges may not look much like the animals familiar to most of us, but they are considered animals. That's because they are always multicellular and grow from an embryo.
They have a somewhat organized structure, including a network of channels that help draw food and water through their bodies. They also have cells specialized for different functions, such as eating, that work together, said CarriAyne Jones, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of British Columbia who helped carry out the study when she was at the Nordic Centre for Earth Evolution at the University of Southern Denmark.
Jones and her colleagues found that sponges raised in the lab could survive on 0.5 per cent of the oxygen in the atmosphere today. Since oxygen makes up roughly 20 per cent of our atmosphere, that means the sponges needed oxygen concentrations of just 0.1 per cent.
"What we're showing is that actually, basal [primitive] animals don't need that much oxygen," Jones said in a phone interview.
She added that the results, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggest that oxygen levels might not have been the limiting factor that delayed the rise of animal life.
"We have to look for some other reason why they waited until 800 million years ago to evolve."
Daniel Mills, a Ph.D. student at the University of Southern Denmark and the lead author of the paper, said in a video interview that while the idea of oxygen triggering the rise of animals was popular, "it was never really clear how much oxygen early animals needed."
Accustomed to normal oxygen levels
He decided to test that with sponges collected in the sea nearby, where oxygen levels are normal for the present day.
He, Jones and their colleagues grew the sponges in tanks with low oxygen, while monitoring their health and behaviour.
Jones said she was surprised by how well the sponges did at really low oxygen levels.
"I expected them to maybe not feed as much or respire as well," she said. "They did just fine. They grew. They respired. They fed."
Occasionally, the oxygen in the tanks would drop to zero. At that point, some sponges survived, but others died, showing they do need some oxygen to survive.
But so long as the levels stayed above 0.5 per cent of present day levels, the sponges thrived.
Jones said some sponges do live in low-oxygen environments today, such as Vancouver Island's Saanich Inlet in B.C.
But the fact that a sponge from a normal oxygen environment was fine at low oxygen suggests "this is just sort of inherent in their physiology."
Mills said in a Skype interview that being able to survive on low oxygen may be the result of how sponges' bodies are organized, and in fact theoretical calculations have suggested that a sponge body type wouldn't need much oxygen.
Still, it is also possible that the ability to survive in low-oxygen environments may be something that evolved more recently in sponges, he acknowledged. But if it is something found in most or all sponges.

PHOTOS: SEE What Kim Kardashian Says About Her Backside

American television personality, Kim Kardashian has come out to rubbish rumours making the rounds that her famed curvy backside appeared even curvier after childbirth because she'd had fat injected in it.

The 33-year-old reality star took to her Twitter, to slam such reports.

In a lengthy rant, Kim seethed: 'I'm seeing all these nonsense tabloids claiming I have butt implants-injections. Get a life! Using pics of me 15lbs skinnier (before I had my baby) comparing to me now!'.

Having such rumors online isn't just damaging to her career but also to the self-esteem of women and girls who look up to her, she continues - not to mention how nasty it is to be always putting her under the microscope like that.

"Using pics of me 15lbs [6 kg] skinnier (before I had my baby) comparing to me now! I still have weight to lose. Anyone who has had a baby knows how hard it is to lose weight (especially the last bit of weight) & your body totally changes!" Kim continues.

"Making fun of me pregnant & making fun of me trying to lose weight now shame on you. I'm not perfect but I will never conform to your skinny standards sorry! Not me," she says.

While she has a point that no one should judge pregnant women for how many pounds they gain while with child, since she welcomed baby North last summer, Kim has been inviting talk about her weight by talking about it herself whenever she's had the chance.

She finished off her rant by saying 'BTW I've lost a lot so far & I'm proud of that! Don't give young girls a complex!'.

But while Kim was covering her frame as she stepped out in New York on Wednesday, she certainly didn't let the cold weather stop her from showing off her cleavage.

Check out these pictures of her:

I Should’ve Fled Nigeria After Stealing N45m From The Robberies - Graduate Armed Robber

A 30-year-old man has been apprehended by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Lagos State Police Command believed to have been the mastermind of two robberies at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja in 2012 and 2013.
photo
The suspect, Samuel Mayegun, aka Asiwaju, who claimed to be a graduate of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, was arrested in the Ikorodu area of Lagos last Thursday.
It was reported in April 2013 that about eight suspects stole over N400m from bureau de change operators at the airport in 2012 and went for another robbery the following year and carted away N9m.
The police were able to arrest most of the suspects after the second robbery but it was learnt that Mayegun continued to evade arrest from policemen until he was arrested by policemen while attempting to stage another robbery.
The suspect, who claimed to have made N45m from the robberies, said he continued to rob because all his investments had failed.
He said his only regret was that he did not flee the country when he had the chance to.
He said, “My regret is that I did not heed the advice of my friends who told me to run away from the country because N45m was enough to do good business abroad.
“I also feel sad that God saved me and gave me the opportunity to escape, but I messed it up. God really loved me because all our members were rounded up and I was the only one left, yet I did not use the opportunity to escape.”
The suspect, who claimed to be married with children, said he continued to rob because he was constantly losing money from his businesses.
He said, “I invested some of my share in some businesses: I bought lands and trucks for transport business. Some of my share was taken from me by some street urchins who got wind of the robbery and threatened to report me to the police, so I gave them some money. Unfortunately, my transport business did not move well and I became broke.
“I did not want to go back to robbery because all other members had been arrested by SARS, but because of hunger, I was forced to make one more attempt this year. I was unlucky that it was in SARS hands that I landed.”
The suspect said all those who participated in the robbery were given N45m each except the informants at the airport who received N1m each.
It was learnt that Mayegun was arrested by SARS men, led SP Abba Kyari, while he was staging another robbery with four others, identified as Biodun Adegayo, Ezekiel Anthony, Ibrahim Sado and Femi Osiyelu.
Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, while parading the suspects, said they were arrested based on a tip-off by a credible source.
He said, “On that fateful day, we received a tip off about 2am that the notorious armed robber had left his hideout in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, for Ikorodu, Lagos, where they were planning a mega operation the next day.
“We recovered one general purpose machine gun, one Ak47 rifle with serial number 533124, two double-barreled locally-made pistols, 10 GPMG and eight AK47 magazines respectively and 32 live cartridges.
“During interrogation, Mayegun confessed to the robberies at the airport, where a bureau de change was robbed and millions of naira was carted away, and he admitted to getting N45m as his share.
“He had recruited other gang members to continue his nefarious acts because he thought the police had forgotten him being the only member of the airport robbery gang that eluded arrest.”
Manko said the suspect also confessed to participating in other robberies in both Lagos and some South West states and a bank robbery in Kwara State.

A 23-year-old man, Abdulazeez Lateef has been remanded in prison by an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stabbing his lover, Sherifat Adisa, 40, to death.
The police said Lateef stabbed the deceased with a knife at the Mile 12 area of Lagos.
It was learnt that they had been dating since 2010.
Lateef, who lives on Ojoola Street, Ejigbo, was said to be frequently visit the deceased in her apartment. However, things turned sore between the lovers when Lateef visited Adisa and allegedly saw a pair of trousers in her room.
He was said to have asked his lover and taken the trousers away, while she protested but he was said to have returned it some months after taking the trousers away.
However an argument ensued after the late Sherifat was said to have insisted that Lateef  put on the trousers first, suspecting he had cast a spell on it.
Angry Lateef allegedly stormed out of the room and grabbed a knife from a trader outside the house, with which he stabbed the deceased repeatedly to death.
The investigating police officer, Inspector Okeowo John, said the defendant was arrested two days after the incident at Mile 12.
John added that the defendant confessed to the crime and was also arrested with an exhibit.
