Why It Is Not Compulsory To Celebrate Prophet Muhammad's Birthday - Imam Reveals

An Ibadan-based Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Fadhilulah Hamzat, has revealed why it is not compulsory for Muslims to celebrate Mawlud Nabiyy or the birthday of Prophet Muhammad.
In his Friday sermon at the W.O. Lawal Central Mosque, Ring Road, Ibadan, Oyo State, Hamzat said that there was no place in the Qur’an and Hadith, where the celebration of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad was mentioned, adding that the only reference point to marking the prophet's birthday is his saying that he fasts on Mondays, because he was born on a Monday.
He revealed that Prophet Muhammad never celebrated his birthday, neither did he direct his followers to do so.
He also said that the Prophet had received enough honour from Allah in the Qur'an and that Muslims should emulate the prophet, imbibing his virtues and teachings of peace and love rather than collecing money for the purpose of organising events to honour the Prophet.
According to the Imam, those marking the Prophet's day which falls on Monday, Jan. 13, were doing so for commercial gains.

He therefore called on Muslims to use the month of Rabiul-Awwal in which the Prophet was born, to rededicate their lives to Allah.
